As music formats retain their popularity – and in the case of vinyl LPs, increase in popularity – the separate issues of appraising values and authentication remain important. And, where vinyl has become a luxury item, the opportunity for fraud and counterfeiting grows. More regional and local institutions are taking a serious look at their musical cultural history. Manchester University is just the latest to start actively collecting music memorabilia. Donations will be actively solicited from musicians, promoters, venue managers, and collectors. And values will be driven up as people realize more and more just how expressive and important – and rare and precious – are such artifacts.
A tragic loss, making some rare albums even rarer.

It is a worthy community effort to preserve and promote a regional music heritage. Many small towns could use the example of Athens, Alabama in renovating an historic but underutilized structure for an archive, museum, and performing space to keep traditions alive.
We’ll be seeing more and more of these big collections coming to market as the Boomers decide they don’t need their “stuff” anymore. Big opportunity for archives, institutions, investors, and, of course, collectors.
